Recently a video went viral after it showed the BN candidate for the Sungai Buloh parliamentary seat in GE15 Khairy Jamaluddin getting an earful from a makcik who scolded him for failing to fulfill promises back when he was minister.
In the video which was shared on TikTok, KJ had approached a makcik at an eatery by the roadside while on his rounds. However, he was met with a hostile makcik who asked him what kind of help he could even offer.
KJ explained to her that he would be able to provide basic amenities for her eatery, but only after the elections. But the makcik didn’t seem like she was having any of it and insisted that he fulfil his promise instantly or that it would just be another empty promise.
Despite Khairy explaining to her that he cannot give financial assistance during his campaign trail as it may be seen as a form of bribery, the makcik didn’t seem to care as she accused Khairy of not fulfilling his promises when he was a minister.
“You’ve been a minister for more than 10 years. What have you done for us? Now only you want to do so? It’s all just promises!”
“She got angry, but that’s okay. That’s her right.”
With the video going viral, KJ has since issued a response as to give some context as to what had actually happened.
After a town hall with prospective university students at Universiti Teknologi Mara’s Puncak Alam campus yesterday (November 16), Khairy assured that it was all good.
The woman in the video whose shop has a damaged roof had asked Khairy what help he could offer her immediately.
“I have no problem with what happened. We meet voters during walkabouts. There is no censorship. We meet all levels of society and not all will support us. Some are not satisfied. They are free to say anything.”
“I tried to explain to the woman that it would be a mistake to give her anything now. She got angry, but that’s okay. That’s her right. As a candidate, we have to accept any point of view. But we have to explain that if something is to be given during campaigning, it would be an offence,” he added.
What do you think of the makcik’s points? Are they reasonable enough?
