Apparently it’s a universal factor where most students favour their English teachers as they are known to be understanding and caring compared to teachers of other subjects.
Keeping that universal ‘law’ alive is none other than Cikgu Ahmad Shahrul Azhan Ibrahim, a Kelantanese English teacher with over 1.1Million followers on TikTok!
Cikgu Ahmad or better known as Sir aSai on social media, became popular in 2021 after uploading various engaging SPM English Tips through his TikTok account for his students to learn from.
“It all started during the pandemic when my students slowly lost interest in online learning classes and I found out that they love using TikTok”, he told WORLD OF BUZZ.
Cikgu Ahmad has been teaching for 22 years and now teaches English to upper secondary students at SMK Long Ghafar 2, Kota Bharu Kelantan.
“We have a lot of fun making the videos and it gained attention in 2021 when my TikTok was covered by various media outlets”, he said.
For National Teacher’s Day in 2021, Cikgu Ahmad was awarded the Guru PdPR Creative (Creative Teacher and Learning at Home) as part of the Ministry of Education’s initiative for online learning.
The teacher’s students are proud to have a “famous TikTok teacher” who creates fun educational content, and many are excited to participate in the videos, including students that Cikgu Ahmad doesn’t teach.
Parents are also supportive and happy to see their children enthusiastic about learning English through the teacher’s creative and innovative teaching methods.
One of the teacher’s students, Syakir (@mankieyy) who was frequently featured in the videos, has gained popularity as an influencer and gained 100k followers on TikTok. “I’m just a regular teacher”
Despite the success and attention, the teacher remains humble and sees himself as just a regular teacher who loves teaching and educating his students. He hopes to continue creating creative and fun videos and inspire other teachers and parents to embrace social media as a limitless tool to enhance education.
“I do not see myself as a very popular teacher in Malaysia. I am just a regular teacher, doing my job educating my kids at school. To some it may sound boring.. but for me, I love teaching and it is my life now.”
“As for the pronunciation videos, they all come from my observation when my students pronounced them wrongly during my classes”, he says.
