The Kelantan state government was revealed to have bought a Mercedes-Benz car for its high-ranking official. It was reported by Berita Harian that the car was only bought according to the official’s needs and for security reasons.
Deputy Chief Minister (MB) of Kelantan Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah mentioned at a press conference that so far, only one car has been bought for the state secretary, Datuk Nazran Muhammad. However, they do plan on acquiring more Mercedes-Benz cars for other high-ranking officials.
“We admit that from a financial perspective, Kelantan is not as rich when compared to other states, but we chose to buy Mercedes-Benz cars based on need, as a lot of our cars have already been used for a long period, some for as long as 12 years.”
He was quoted by Utusan Online as saying,
“The purchase of a Mercedes-Benz car should not be an issue, because they have also been used under the administration of former Kelantan MB Datuk Nik Aziz. We buy cars based on need, and it’s not like we changed all of our cars because we’ve only just bought one Mercedes.”
“Besides that, the maintenance cost is actually cheaper compared to that of Toyota and Honda vehicles.”
Earlier this week (11th September), Kelantan state Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Husam Musa accused the state government of purchasing the Mercedes-Benz. He mentioned that the purchase raised some concerns as the state’s funds were not very reassuring.
