Climbing Mount Everest is never an easy feat and many people train for an extended amount of time before attempting to scale it and sometimes, they still fail to do so.
Sometimes, these attempts may turn deadly and as of now, the death toll is at least 310 people. The Kedah APM Director has fallen victim to Mount Everest during his climbing mission.
According to APM KEdah on Facebook, Kedah Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) director Lt Col Awang Askandar Ampuan Yaacub passed away on 19 May.
Kosmo! reports that the APM director fell at 8,000m above sea level and was only 20 minutes away from the summit.
He was given an oxygen mask but was extremely fatigued, so he was brought back to Camp 4 which is 7,925 metres above sea level.
When they reached Camp 4, immediate first aid was given, however, he was unable to make it and took his last breath during treatment.
Former Kedah football coach Azraai Khor Abdullah, 70, told BERNAMA that Awang Iskandar’s death is a terrible loss to the country.
“He had told me how proud he would be to wave the APM and Jalur Gemilang flags atop Mount Everest. Malaysia has lost a good leader who was generous in sharing his knowledge and experience,” he said.
Condolences go to the director’s family, we hope that he will rest in peace.
