The Road Transport Department (JPJ) yesterday revealed that a total of 45,973 offences was detected during the Ops Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2022 (OPS HRA 2022) through its Automatic Awareness Security System (AwAS) cameras as of 5 May 2022. These offences involved speeding and running the red light at traffic lights, both of which are among the five major offences that will be subject to court action.
JPJ also stressed that the 45,973 vehicle owners will not be granted any compound options, hence they will be hauled to court for their traffic offences. They will be charged under Section 79 of the Road Transport Act 1987 and if convicted, may be fined up to RM2,000.
As reported by national news agency Bernama, JPJ revealed that a total of 45 AwAS cameras are fully operational involving 29 cameras installed for speeding and 16 cameras for traffic light violations. The AwAS cameras recorded a total of 4.7 million vehicles on highways nationwide during the 7-day operation of OPS HRA 2022. An additional 1.5 million vehicles were also recorded at traffic lights.
Through the cameras, JPJ caught 35,618 vehicles driving over the speed limit and another 10,355 vehicles running the red lights at traffic lights. In a statement, JPJ also asserted that road users who were found to have committed both offences (speeding and red light violation) will be given 4 demerit points under the Demerit Points System for Traffic Offences (KEJARA) for every offence under Subsection 40(1) or subsection 79(2) of the Road Transport Act.
The offenders may face suspension or revocation of their driver’s license should the demerit points hauled up pass a certain threshold. Hence, JPJ called upon on all road users throughout the country to continue to comply with the regulations to ensure the safety of all, and eventually help reduce road accidents and deaths on the road.
