When it comes to Raya celebrations, Baju Melayu is no doubt the to-go fashion. Typically, a full set of Baju Melayu is worn with loafer shoes or leather shoes.
When it comes to the styling of a Baju Melayu, local rapper Joe Flizzow has a reminder for those aged 21 and above.
In a 50-second video shared by sneaker-LAH on Instagram 3 days ago, Joe spoke about how a full set of Baju Melayu should be worn properly and not paired with the wrong shoes.
“Please don’t wear a full set of Baju Melayu with sneakers. Please! That’s what the kids wear. If I see it, I’ll smack you.”
Joe stressed that a full set of Baju Melayu should be worn with proper shoes or capal. You can watch and listen to the clip below.
On point!
Joe’s video above gained the attention of fellow Malaysians. The receptions, however, were mixed. Some of them agreed that Baju Melayu has to be worn properly & not paired with the wrong shoes.
“Agreed! ‘If you’re wearing a full set’ – It’s just a reminder to make you look sleek and good.”
“He’s talking about the culture and custom of wearing the Baju Melayu. Get it right.”
It’s a free country, Joe
In the meantime, others think that there are no rules & regulations when it comes to wearing the full set of the iconic Baju Melayu and that people are free to wear whatever they please.
“People celebrate Raya differently. If they’re happy wearing sneakers, then let them be. Raya is meant to be a happy day and that’s all that matters.”
“It’s a free country anyway. Some don’t even have anything to wear during Raya. The month of Ramadhan should’ve put some sense of humility in us, not dictating on what should & shouldn’t be worn. Be grateful.”
In most cases, fashion is subjective. But in this case, do you think that attire is meant to be worn according to the custom or people are free to dress in any way they deem fit?
