“It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” 5 Habits M’sians Can’t Help Doing When It’s Holiday Season

For some, it’s the start of the year-end elongated school holidays; for others, it’s rush hour to accomplish everything at the same time before the new year kicks in. Regardless of your age group, the sight of wintery decorations, sound of Christmas songs, and whiff of returning wintery delicacies are enough to get all of us in the mood for the holiday season! ?

Though we never needed to celebrate it, we Malaysians can’t help but want to do things that feel right with the season and be part of the worldwide community. ? Here are a couple of habits that we simply NEED to do during the holidays!

1. Using this festive occasion as an excuse to get together with family and friends (and to EAT)

Instead of roast turkey, beef Wellingtons and eggnog, our Malaysian pot luck has fried mee hoon, roast duck and sirap (then again, we have the decors to hit home the fact that it’s for the holidays ?)! Sometimes we even have a randomised gift exchange that’s done via lucky draw, just for the fun of it.

At the end of the day, what matters most is the time we get to spend together. ☺️

2. We MUST take pictures with holiday decor in the mall

Even though we can’t enjoy a white Christmas, we have SO. MANY. MALLS! And what does that entail? It’s SUPER easy for us to go out and admire multitudes of extravagant seasonal adornments, especially when we have to shop for gifts. ? If the decorations are genuinely Instagrammable, then it’s a huge plus! ?

3. Watch classic festive movies for the 20th time

Forget about those Netflix movies! Home Alone, Nightmare Before Christmas, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Die Hard (debatable) – these are the real deal holiday movies (along with SO many others) that made us go through a rollercoaster of laughter and tears every single time, ultimately ending on a feel-good, hopeful note. ?

4. Feel “snow” in an indoor winter wonderland like we’re in NYC!

We can’t help but feel like we’re missing out on an authentic festive atmosphere with the lack of snow in our country (then again, we’d be terrified if it does happen ?).

Fortunately, we have winter-themed indoor amusement parks to compensate with, like Snowalk by i-City and SnowWorld Genting Highlands! Expect ice sculptures ?, icy slides ⛸️, freezing “snow” ❄️ and, of course, snowmen ☃️!

5.  Turn the air-conditioning WAY down to 16°C at full fan speed, then drink hot chocolate

Turn off the fan, loop your fave Christmas songs (Mariah Carey and Michael Bublé FTW!), and get your cosiest blanket, sweater and socks – now you’ve got yourself the ultimate slumber party! Even better if you have your closest friends sleeping over, so you guys can imagine talking into the night in the wintery countryside.

All that’s missing is a fireplace, otherwise, we’d have a picture-perfect setting for the cold holidays!
