Everyone knows maintaining your appearance in the public eye is always necessary when you’re attending social functions and events. But would you dress up if you’re just heading to the mall to shop with your family?
A man recently took to a university’s confessions page anonymously to share his experience of getting ignored by mall staff while visiting a shopping mall in KL, all because he was dressed in house clothes and slippers.
“I’m very used to wearing a T-shirt, shorts, and slippers because I don’t think it’s necessary to wear shoes to be cool,” said the anonymous man in his post.
However, because of his casual wear, he says that when he goes into a department store to see something, the staff won’t attend to him and busy themselves with other customers instead.
“The staff went to serve other people and completely ignored me. My family and I thought they were busy and that they would attend to us afterward but after attending to the other customer, they were gone.”
He then went on to question if the mall store staff looked down on people who dress casually. “I’d like to ask, would they really look down on people like that? What’s wrong with wearing slippers? Now I can only go to other stores to buy. Do I need to wear a suit and drive for an hour to buy something (because it is only available there)?”
Nonetheless, many netizens took to the comment section to say that the mall staff might be ignoring him just because some customers prefer not to be disturbed when they are shopping.
Others said that you can expect this kind of treatment at luxury department stores.
