Half-boiled eggs on toast with a cup of hot coffee sounds like breakfast for the champ, and it’s definitely 1 of the local’s favourites. The “excitement” when we crack the eggs open right before we sip on the half-boiled eggs is always there.
However, a Malaysian man recently visited a Kopitiam in Penang and claimed that as customers, we shouldn’t be the ones cracking the eggs when it’s cooked. As for the customer himself, he’s not fond of the idea of cracking the eggs by himself, and the reason is simple – it’s not his job to get his hands dirty.
“We’re paying customers, why should we do it by ourselves? Do we need to make our own coffee in the kitchen next time?”
The man who visited Penang recently took to Facebook to vent his anger but the post has since been removed. He continued to ask rhetorically and sarcastically,
“Do I need to fry my own noodles? It’s not that I’m not paying for my food!”
While he understands the trend of ordering food online today, the man is still baffled about the “culture” of cracking the eggs on his own as a paying customer.
“Is it because the workers are lazy? I have no idea. All I know is it burns my hand, and I have to go to the washroom to wash my hands!”
“It’s less appetising if the workers crack it open”
The post has been reshared by many public Facebook pages, including 大马资讯网, and some netizens were entertained to see such a petty issue being made into a big deal. Other netizens criticise the man and said that it’s a common Malaysian practice.
“That’s how Malaysians consume half-boiled eggs – cracking the eggs by themselves. This is to ensure customers get to eat hot and fresh eggs. How hard is it to crack an egg?”
“First time, bro?”
“It’s called a sense of ceremony, don’t you know?”
“I don’t think it’s appetising if the workers crack it open for me. It’s better to do it on our own, and it tastes better.”
“It’s more hygienic.”
“This is how we’ve always eaten half-boiled eggs.”
“It’s better to do it on our own, it’s almost like an accomplishment, although it burns our hands.”
Fellow Malaysians, do you enjoy cracking the half-boiled eggs on your own despite the heat, or do you think it should be done by the restaurant workers?
