With Malaysians expected to enjoy the lower price of RON95 soon, which will be set at RM1.99 per litre, Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim reiterated that the fuel price reduction is only meant for Malaysians because he wants to prioritise Malaysians.

Foreigners, including Singaporeans, are expected to pay market price, which can go up to RM2.50 per litre.

A Singaporean netizen, however, took to Threads and sought clarification on the matter from Malaysian social media users.

“Why are you against Singaporeans and other nationalities (but specifically Singaporeans) buying RON95 petrol?”

The netizen dubbed the act of sharing “the Kampung spirit,” and said that RON95 is high quality and affordable. The netizen also stated that if Malaysians shared petrol with Singaporeans, Singapore would share other things in return.

Earlier, a Singaporean netizen claimed that Malaysia is still far behind because we are “too stingy” to share petrol with outsiders.

PMX also said that foreigners are not eligible for the fuel price reduction because they do not pay taxes in Malaysia. Additionally, PMX clarified that no Malaysian would be allowed to enjoy subsidies as foreigners in other countries.

Malaysian and Singaporean social media users respond

From paying taxes to eligibility, both Malaysian and Singaporean social media users explained why they thought it was not a wise idea for Malaysians.

Another netizen mentioned that if the Singapore government allows foreigners to purchase the HBD flat, then Singaporeans will be eligible for subsidised RON95. HDB flats are public housing apartments, managed by the Housing & Development Board (HDB).

Do you think that subsidised RON95 should be reserved only for locals?
