A group of illegal photographers around the KLCC area was fined by the authorities last night, with each compound costing up to RM2,000.

In an operation known as OPS LENS conducted last night, DBKL raided the area, which is believed to be the hotspot for unlicensed photography activities. No one was arrested in the operation, but a total of 41 compounds were issued to almost 30 unlicensed photographers.

According to DBKL’s Facebook post today (July 28), the authorities also took the opportunity to check on the photographers’ citizenship status, the validation of their documents, and criminal records. The raid was also joined by the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), the Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM), the National Registration Department (JPN), and the Department of Federal Territories (JWP).

“Unauthorised photography activities is not only illegal but also pose risks to the tourists.”

“The photography activities are done on the pedestrian path or on the road, which not only endangers the photographers and the customers, but also interrupts the flow of traffic.”

In its post, DBKL also reminded everyone that the public space belongs to everyone and should be utilised ethically by following all the rules that have been set.

Photographers were shocked by the fine

In another report by Harian Metro, one of the photographers was shocked to receive the fine, stating that it was his first time receiving a compound for taking pictures in the area.

“Look at this compound. It’s RM2,000, how am I going to pay? I would go bald if I get compounded every day!”

“If I’m going to get compounded every day, I’ll have to look for a new job.”

The photographer, however, claimed that the authorities were planning to authorise their photography activities by giving them licenses, but did not elaborate further on the matter.

“We’ll just wait and see.”

Based on the compound notice issued, the individual involved is subject to action under By-law 3(1) of the Federal Territory Hawkers Licensing By-laws 2016.
