Life can be unfair.  Sometimes, doing the right thing can land you in trouble. An Indonesian lady has first-hand experience going through this unfairness when she was slapped with a six-month jailed term after exposing her cheating boss.

Initially, the lady, Baiq Nuril Maknun, was cleared of any charges when she allegedly broke the law against spreading indecent material by the court but this ruling was later overturned by the supreme court.

Her husband, as quoted by NST, said,

“I’m saddened and shocked by this sentence.”

This case actually dated back to 2012 when Maknun secretly recorded a conversation of the school principal in which he shared explicit sexual details about the affair he had with another colleague in the school.

Maknun was then convinced by the co-workers to release the recording as to expose the school principal’s promiscuous behaviour.

Her lawyer, Joko Jumadi, explained that,

“The principal shared very graphic details about his affair with the school’s treasurer in the recording.”

After Maknun revealed the recording, the principal fired her and made an official complaint to the authorities. Initially, she was cleared of any charges brought by the local court in Lombok.

However, the decision was reversed by the country’s supreme court, charging with the violation of the electronic information law and she was slapping her with a six-month jail term on top of a 500 million rupiah fine (about RM143,000).

Maknun expressed to local reporters about the unfairness of the ruling. She said,

“I’m just a victim – what did I do wrong?”

The supreme court, however, did not provide any reasons for reversing the initial verdict.

This has prompted the public to question Indonesia’s justice system which has always been criticised for being influenced by corruption. Even the electronic information law is deemed too vague which allows itself to be manipulated and misused.

What do you think of the verdict? Was it a fair one or do you think Maknun should have never exposed the principal in the first place? Share with us your thoughts in the comment section.
