The Turkiye & Syria earthquake which took place earlier in the week is definitely disastrous.
Recently, 2 Malaysian students who were caught in the natural disaster shared what went on at that time with BERNAMA.
Zahirul Amin Mohamad, 21, a second-year university student and Isyraf Wan Haziq, 19, a new language student at Gaziantep University were in their hostel room when they felt some tremors.
“We often feel minor tremors here (Gaziatep). So, I was not bothered at first but on Monday, after a few minor tremors, it felt different; we were really shaken.”
“At first, I didn’t know what to do. My hostel is on the fifth floor and when I saw my floor mates running down, I decided to just follow them.”
Before the other tremors hit, Zahirul and his other friends, including Isyraf Wan Haziq, went back to their rooms to collect some essentials.
One day after the disaster, they stayed in a nearby mosque before it got too crowded and on the second day, they went made their way back to the university after learning that they provided accommodation.
However, at that time, the embassy was able to contact them and extracted them to the Malaysian embassy in Ankara where they remained safe until now.
“Even now, the tremor is still felt in Gaziantep every three hours. On the first day, we felt tremors every hour.”
Zahirul Amin Mohamad mentions that the memory is still fresh in his head: “Currently, even the slightest earth movement, scares me. I am still traumatised.”
The earthquake with its centre in Turkiye’s Kahramanmaras, about 78km from Gaziantep, has killed about 10,000 people in total (Syria and Turkiye).
We hope that the two Malaysian students recover from the traumatizing incident.
