A regular trope for most family dramas is the stereotypical evil, possessive mother-in-law character with a cunning smile that will go to extreme lengths to get rid of a daughter-in-law they don’t favour. We’ve watched so many of these portrayals that some of us believe that’s exactly how mothers-in-law are supposed to be.
However, Twitter user (@AshlynaShah) shared her interaction with her loving mother-in-law and how her mother-in-law takes care of her like her own daughter.
Ashlyna: Ma, did you buy me an iron, there’s an iron here?
MIL: Yeah, that’s for you
Ashlyna: Is it cause mine was broken? Thank you, Ma!
MIL: Is your body aching after playing badminton? I have some Panadol here for you.
Ashlyna: I’m okay Ma, Khalif is the one with leg aches. (Khalif is Ashlyna’s husband)
MIL: Ashlyna, do you want some biryani? I’ll get some in a container for you!
Ashlyna’s tweets quickly went viral garnering over 10,000 retweets with Twitter users praising their relationship and some of them even felt a tiny bit jealous. Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Ashlyna said her relationship with her mother-in-law is like a real mother and daughter.
“I never felt like an outsider in this family. She loves me like her own daughter. I am thankful and I pray that this good relationship lasts forever. “
She added that there are probably those “evil mother-in-law” types that actually exist in society but what she can say is that not every stereotype is applicable to all mothers-in-law. To improve one’s relationship with their mother-in-law, Ashlyna feels that firstly, you must be willing to learn new things as every family has their own values and certain ways of doing things.
“Be understanding and put yourself in her shoes. Think about how certain situations may make her feel, and how it would make you feel if you were in her position.”
Kudos to Ashlyna and her mother-in-law for truly setting an example of how when you marry someone, you’re getting married to both them and their family. So, when you’re finding a partner in the future, I guess you already have a template of how their mothers should be!
