While doctors try their best to treat and save their patients, sometimes mistakes happen and a tragedy occurs as a result. Misdiagnosis is one of the worst mistakes that a doctor can make and in most cases, misdiagnosis can lead to dire consequences.
Take Abu Baharin for example. He’s a 34-year-old man from Klebang, Melaka who went to the hospital for a simple medical examination in 2015 as he was suffering from a kneecap problem due to a motorcycle accident four years prior, The Star reported. Unfortunately, the surgical procedure went WRONG and he ended up losing his right leg instead.
With the help of his lawyer, Baharin sued the hospital and ended up with a settlement worth RM 1.3 million. However, he echoed a cliche that has never resonated more strongly to him by saying money can’t buy him happiness.
“I don’t have a proper life now. My wife and my eight-year-old son are not with me.”
He also added that he’s a lonely man and often talks to himself. He said, “The relationship with my wife became strained after the incident, but I accepted this as fate, and now I live with my adopted family.”
Sessions Court judge Elisabet Paya Wan awarded the amount to Abu Baharin, which includes compensation for prosthetic expenses and loss of income.
And to think, all this happened just because someone somewhere made a mistake.
