On Sunday (January 15), tragedy struck Nepal in what is the deadliest plane crash the country has experienced in over 30 years. 68 people lost their lives when the country’s Yeti Airlines’ ATR 72 aircraft went down near Pokhara.
Among the victims were 37 men, 25 women, 3 children and 3 infants. Those on the plane consisted of 57 Nepali nationals, 5 Indians, 4 Russians, 2 Koreans, an Australian national, an Argentinian national, a French national and an Irish national.
According to a report by CNN, the plane that was carrying 72 passengers (4 crew members and 68 passengers), had departed from Kathmandu and was heading for Pokhara. Just as they were about to land at their destination, the pilot had requested a change of runway.
“The permission was granted. We don’t ask (why), whenever a pilot asks, we give permission to change approach,” a Pokhara airport spokesperson shared.
The cause of the crash is currently being investigated by a 5-person committee.
Since then, videos of the crash have gone viral online, including a Facebook live stream from inside the aircraft by one of the passengers.
