Recently, it was reported that a Malaysian OKU student was allegedly disallowed from applying for public university courses and programmes despite having a matriculation CGPA of 3.83, apparently due to his having autism.

The Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) has since clarified that this issue has been resolved.

According to a report by Kosmo, KPT Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir stressed that KPT’s policy is clear, that there is no discrimination against any person who is eligible to pursue higher education.

“That is why when this case was publicised, I immediately asked the relevant parties to conduct a review and investigation because our policy is clear on the rights of OKU to pursue higher education,”

“What happened is that when he (the student) made his application under ‘OKU’, the universities in question wanted to know what type of OKU he is so that adjustments could be made based on his condition,” he said, adding that KPT will ensure the student pursues his studies.
