Here’s Everything That’s Happening in August! RMCO Policies to Deadlines You Need To Know

August is right around the corner and while many thought the MCO would be over by now, the inconsistent rise in Covid-19 cases every day has caused the government to introduce new regulations that all citizens will have to abide by starting next month. Here’s a quick summary of RMCO policies coming into effect in August:


1. It is mandatory for all citizens to wear a mask in public

Starting 1st August, all citizens are required to wear masks in public places and on board public transportation. Violators will have to bear a fine of up to RM1,000.


2. The official ceiling price of face masks will be lowered

Starting 15th August, the government will lower the ceiling price for retail face masks from RM1.50 a piece to RM1.20 apiece. The wholesale price of each mask will also be reduced from RM1.20 to RM1.15 apiece.


3. Applications are open for the Malaysia-Singapore Reciprocal Green Lane

The Malaysian-Singapore Reciprocal Green Lane (RGL) and Periodic Commuting Arrangement (PCA) will be open for applications on 10th August. This agreement was made to ease cross-border travel for both Singaporeans and Malaysians. Cross-border travel is expected to resume by the earliest date of 17th August.


4. All Malaysians from Semenanjung, Sabah and Labuan need to be quarantined upon entry into Sarawak.

From the period of 1st August to 14th August, all citizens from Semenanjung, Sabah, and Labuan who are planning on visiting Sarawak will need to be quarantined in hotels when they enter the state.


5. Pos Malaysia is suspending all international mail and parcel deliveries

Pos Malaysia Berhad will be suspending mail, parcel, and Express Mail Service (EMS) to all international destinations temporarily from 3rd August onwards. The temporary suspension of the mentioned services is due to the different Covid-19 restrictions over different countries.

70 per cent discount is offered for payment of summons issued by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) starting 1st to 31st August 2020.


7.  Mortgage loan repayments will be extended by 3 months

Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, recently announced that those who lost their jobs in 2020 and have yet to find a new job will enjoy an extended moratorium period of 3 months. The PM also added that individuals who suffered salary cuts due to the pandemic will have their monthly installment payments reduced according to the rate in which their salaries were deducted.


8. The government will start distributing RM50 e-wallet money to all citizens who applied for e-Penjana

From the period of 31st July to 24th September, the government will be distributing your RM50 e-Penjana money which will be banked in your e-wallet either Boost, GrabPay or Touch ‘n Go Wallet.


9. Citizens who haven’t received their BSH money can start appealing

While the government was initially supposed to start distributing the third phase of BSH payments in July, there are citizens who have yet to receive their living assistance money. Those who are eligible but have yet to receive their money can appeal between the period of 7th August to 6th September. Visit their official website for more information!


10. The deadline for tax filing is at the end of August

The deadline for tax filing (Form B and Form P) was postponed from the end of June to 31st August this year. Remember to file your taxes before the deadline!


11. Public holidays and school holidays will go according to the following dates in August

1st August: The second day of Hari Raya Haji (official holiday for Kedah, Kuantan, Perlis and Terengganu.)

2nd August: Supplementary Hari Raya Haji holiday (for Kelantan and Terengganu only.)

20th August: Awal Muharram

31st August: National Day

Parents, take note! National primary and secondary school students will be having school holidays from the period of 20th August (Thursday) to 24th August (Monday). Visit the Ministry of Education’s website for more information.


12. National day parade cancelled for 2020

Defence Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, announced that the National Day Parade held every 31st August will be canceled this year due to the risk it poses on the spread of Covid-19 by encouraging the gathering of large crowds in close proximity.


13. 31st August is the last day of RMCO 

The Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) which started on 10th June is supposed to end on 31st August. However, it is yet to be announced whether the government will extend the RMCO given the unpredictable Covid-19 trend.
