With how culture-rich Malaysia is, it also makes for a diverse food palate.
Now, 10 foods were gazetted as heritage foods on 23 February by the Heritage Commissioner Mohamad Muda Bahadin in the Declaration of Heritage Object 2024, reports The Borneo Post.
Without further ado, let’s go through the list together.
Burasak
Burasak is a Bugis delicacy and it is popular in Johor. It is a rice dumpling cooked with coconut milk and then wrapped into a rectangular shape with a banana leaf. This rice dish is usually paired with saucy, savoury dishes.
Mi kolok
Mi kolok sometimes called kolo mee, is a must-have for anyone who is going to Sarawak. Essentially, it is a different version of dry wan tan mee.
Nasi Ambeng
It is a rice dish of Indonesian origin and it is typically served with white rice and paired with chicken curry, beef or chicken rendang, bergedil, and serunding.
Dodol kukus tahi minyak
This dodol popular in Pahang is different from the dodol blocks. This is in individual portions and with a banana-leaf bottom.
Kuih lapis
This kuih is in the childhood of many Malaysians, with its multiple colours in its layers and its sweetness.
Kuih Karas
A traditional kuih in northern Malaysia, kuih karas is a sort of crispy snack made with rice flour.
Uthappam
Uthappam is a type of thosai that is made to be thick and fluffy. There are usually toppings on them such as coconut or more savoury ones such as onions, tomatoes, coriander, et cetera.
Jeruk tuhau
A tuhau is a kind of wild ginger and jeruk tuhau is made by pickling them.
Air katira
Air katira is a type of beverage that is often sold in Ramadan bazaars. Many take creative liberty with the drink as the most important thing is that it contains the katira, or in English, Tragacanth gum, a resin from a certain type of tree.
Bak kut teh
Last but not least and probably the one that has faced the most controversy, bak kut teh has also made the list. Bak kut teh is a type of herbal soup/stew that is made by combining herbs, pork ribs and most of the time, pork offal.
