More than 80% of Covid-19 patients in Malaysia are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, but they are all admitted into hospitals for treatment, said Malaysia’s Director of Health, Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah at a press conference yesterday (23 April).

An asymptomatic patient typically would not show any symptoms of a disease. Our country has a different approach in handling asymptomatic patients when compared to other nations.

According to Free Malaysia Today, Dr. Noor explained that other countries would usually tell asymptomatic people to observe self-isolation at home.

In Malaysia, asymptomatic patients are admitted to hospitals and a close eye is kept on them.

“If we detect early Covid-19 cases, patients are warded to be monitored,” he said at a press conference, yesterday.

He also explained that patients are classified into five categories.

  • Category One is for those without any symptoms
  • Category Two is for those with mild symptoms
  • Category Three is for those showing signs of pneumonia but who do not need oxygen
  • Category Four is for those who need oxygen assistance to breathe
  • Category Five encompasses patients who need ventilators and are placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Yesterday, Malaysia reported two deaths and recorded 71 new cases. The incoming number of cases still show that our nation’s battle with Covid-19 is not over yet.

We hope that everyone continues staying indoors and practice social distancing.
