Remember the couple who was slammed by netizens for hiking Mount Kinabalu with their 16-month-old daughter? Well, another Malaysian mom who often gets criticised for her nature-focused parenting style has spoken.
Recently, a Malaysian mom, Sue Kz (@SueKz93) who advocates for a “less screen more green” parenting style clapped back at haters on Twitter for their critiques of her son not being advanced enough for his age.
In her tweet, Sue wrote that a common critique she receives is, “Kids should be learning their ABCs, 123s, shapes and colours at this age.”
To clap back at those critical comments, Sue said that her son IS learning how to count and recognise shapes and colours.
“He did. Counting seedlings. Learning shapes of mangrove leaves and colours of the crabs. Extra with species identification,” she retorted.
Netizens also praised her for the wholesome way she’s raising and educating her son, calling the outdoors “the real school”.
What is “less screen more green”?
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Sue explains that her “less screen more green” parenting style simply means she reduces her son’s screen time as much as possible. This way, her son mostly spends his time playing outside with nature.
“I want him to enjoy his childhood just like I did before gadgets took over,” Sue said.
However, she often gets critiques that assume her son is not as advanced as other kids his age because they can recognise and memorise alphabets quicker from their screen time. “People also say being outdoors is dirty for kids.”
Regardless, Sue is set on introducing her son to nature as early as possible because she wants to share her love for nature with him.
“I want him to feel comfortable outdoor. I find that many kids nowadays are too comfortable indoors & it’s actually not good for their health, especially mental health.”
Do you think kids these days lack exposure to the outdoors? How much screen time is too much?
