The Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) is proposing shopping centres and malls in the country to prepare a designated area for Malaysians to exercise and engage in sporting activities.
Taking to Facebook, its Minister, Hannah Yeoh said that her Ministry will continue intensifying efforts in promoting malls as a safe area for leisure and sports activities.
Recently, Yeoh officiated the opening of the Digital Sports Arena i-City in Shah Alam which provided just that for the shopping centre’s patrons.
The KBS Minister asserted,
“KBS will continue to collaborate with shopping centres to create a safe leisure and sports area for all layers of society including youth and senior citizens. With areas such as this in malls, it can promote sports culture to visitors and encourage them to try out new sports.”
Previously, Yeoh in a statement revealed that her Ministry has held several online and physical meetings with shopping centres and retailers regarding the proposal.
She added that because shopping malls in Malaysia are all huge, they can have many sites and spaces suitable for activities, especially for the young.
Accordingly, there have also been many plans and collaborations with a host of malls to promote sports activities such as Digital Sports Arena i-City.
However, Yeoh stressed that if a certain space in a mall is used for leisure or sports, it must have heightened security such as CCTV to monitor the area.
