Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) recently revealed that our country has fully embraced cashless payments, whereby last year, each Malaysian made 291 e-payments on average, with over 9.5 billion transactions recorded in total!

Gaining steam since the pandemic, cashless payment, whether through credit and debit cards or QR codes has become the norm in our country and nowadays, it may even feel out of place to use cash.

With that in mind, not all vendors or businesses accept cashless payments in our country and we should at least have some cash on us.

That’s what this food stall owner is urging Malaysians to do, saying that we shouldn’t rely 100% on cashless payments.

The business owner, Kak Ji, took to TikTok via her account @matsallehburger to share a rant in Bahasa Melayu in Kelantanese dialect on customers not having cash on them when going out of their houses and relying solely on cashless payments.

In the video which has garnered over 109,000 views, Kak Ji advised people to at least carry some cash with them as while cashless payments are more convenient, they don’t work smoothly all the time, especially in places where the internet connection is slow.

She added,

“There are sometimes problems with internet connection. You’ve already eaten until full at the restaurant and wanted to pay via cashless, but there’s no internet, what can you do?”

“If the restaurant owner is kind, they’ll allow you to pay another time. But do you think they’ll let you pay another time if you don’t personally know them?”

Kak Ji also shared that she’s now tired of ‘chasing’ customers who promised to pay the next time they come to her food stall but never did.

In the comments, many agreed with Kak Ji’s sharing that you can’t rely 100% on cashless payments.

One commenter said that in places such as Kelantan, going fully cashless is not yet a legitimate option.

Meanwhile, another commenter said that he doesn’t feel good not carrying any cash around for instances such as this.
