Former M’sian Badminton Player Gan Tiek Chai Passes Away

Former national badminton player Gan Tiek Chai passed away at the age of 40.

Born in Kedah on 5 February, 1983, Gan was a left-handed badminton player who has partnered with Koo Kien Keat, Ong Soon Hock, and Tan Bin Shen. He was also close friends with Datuk Lee Chong Wei.

According to reports, Gan died of a heart attack in Surabaya, Indonesia on 5 August 2023. Datuk Lee Chong Wei shared his sadness on Facebook, in his latest post, he wrote: “One day, somewhere… we will pick up our rackets… and play the sports we love again… bro… RIP.”

He shared two photos, in English and Chinese, sharing how heartbroken he is, as well as his love for a friend who’s like family to him. “So long, my brother …Ah Gan”. Datuk Lee Chong Wei said he kept replaying the voice message of Gan, which he agreed to join him in court to play badminton next week.

“Ah Gan was not just a friend; he is family to me. I am grateful for the countless memories we shared together. We met since we were 12 years old. From the classes we shared, to the trainings and tournaments we played together, every moment spent with Teik Chai was filled with laughter, joy, and unconditional love,” he added.

He also shared his deepest condolences to Gan’s family.

Gan’s funeral services will be held at Nirvana 2 starting 6 August to 9 August 2023.
