There seems to be a worrying increase in the discovery of filthy restaurants and hawkers selling food prepared in unhygienic environments.
Recently, it was reported that a foreign seller of fried baby crabs near Jonker Walk in Melaka had his home raided.
Enforcement officers from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Melaka and the Immigration Department of Malaysia (JIM) Melaka raided his home. They found the kitchen where he fries the baby crabs, filled with flies and extremely unsanitary.
The man confessed to frying the baby crabs a day earlier and storing them in containers before selling them to customers on Jonker Walk the next day.
The fried baby crabs were left exposed, risking contamination by fly-borne diseases and were also left on the kitchen floor and had a foul smell.
It was also reported that he had stored tens of kilograms of fried baby crabs in a covered barrel ready to be sold at the market.
Meanwhile, the enforcement team also seized more than 85 packets of cooking oil and wheat flour from his house which he was going to use for his business.
