In case you aren’t aware, Article 350 of the Penal Code, which is “regulated by the Education Regulations (Student Discipline) 2006 under the Education Act 1996”, says that corporal punishment for boys in schools is lawfully right. As long as it doesn’t become a criminal force.
Nevertheless, even though it’s lawful, we see many cases where people take the punishment too far like this teacher. According to The Reporter, a Standard One boy was brutally caned by his discipline teacher for misbehaving.
The boy may be naughty but you don’t have to beat him until he suffers severe wounds!
Shocked to see his severe wounds, Khairil Sharwane, the boy’s father, uploaded pictures of his son’s calves on Facebook to tell his side of the story. Here’s what he wrote:
“Between the devil and the deep blue sea, that’s the position I am in now. I don’t know how to describe the incident that happened.”
“On 22 May 2018 at 1.30pm, my son came home from school and told me that he was caned by the discipline teacher; he then told me that he couldn’t observe his fast because he was caned.”
“His words to me were, ‘Papa, I (Isaac) couldn’t observe my fast because I was caned by my teacher. My teacher told me to tell you about it or else I would be caned again tomorrow’. “
“I immediately figured that he was caned for being naughty and I hadn’t noticed what had happened at that time.”
“Then my son showed the wounds on his legs, which were already smeared with Gamat oil.”
While Khairil understood the teacher’s act of disciplinary, he still thinks that the discipline teacher’s punishment was too harsh as it had caused severe injuries. Not only that, he also confessed that he was disappointed in the school for not taking responsibility over the matter. He further lamented:
“My heart was broken and tears were flowing down my cheeks as I saw my son’s calves that were almost torn after being caned by the discipline teacher. My son may have been naughty but he is only seven. Why was the teacher so cruel towards my son?”
“My fellow brothers and sisters, would you allow such atrocities to happen to your children?”
“The school wasn’t cooperative at all. When we called the school, many excuses were given to avoid confrontation. My son is seven years old, not 17.”
Following the incident, Khairil had lodged a police report about the matter and conducted a medical test to take further action. He also firmly explained that he was not taking revenge but was disappointed and appalled by the teacher’s brainless actions.
“I’ve made a police report, so let the police do their thing. Besides that, a medical report from Ampang Hospital has also been received.”
“I’m not vengeful, but I’m pissed. I’m not that cruel to put you in jail because I know you have a family. However, maybe you should’ve thought twice before caning my child. You shouldn’t have followed your anger and should’ve opted to think rationally,” he concluded.
In all fairness, the teacher may have caned the boy to discipline him but perhaps taking it too far until the boy’s calves were bruised badly was unnecessary.
Remember that it’s okay to discipline a child through corporal punishment but don’t lah be so harsh until they suffer such wounds!
