Recently, Minister of Education, Fadhlina Sidek insisted in Parliament that the school curriculum in Malaysia is comparable to the curriculum of other countries.
The Nibong Tebal Member of Parliament said that, in the curriculum review process, the Malaysian Ministry of Education (KPM) has carried out a comparative study of the school curriculum in this country with other countries such as Singapore, Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom and Finland.
“The findings show that the school curriculum in Malaysia is comparable to the curriculum of other countries.”
“To ensure that the curriculum is always relevant, the Ministry of Education is open to hearing the views of various parties and is committed to improving the implementation of the curriculum,” she said in a written reply in the Dewan Rakyat.
This was in a response to a question from Sri Gading MP Aminolhuda Hassan who wanted the government to explain the measures that had been taken regarding the mismatch of the grade one curriculum with the age of the students as their parents had complained.
Previously, there were reports that the level of the syllabus for grade one students was deemed too advanced compared to their age, to the point that many parties urged the Ministry to review the issue.
Fadhlina said that improving the implementation of the curriculum aims to bridge the gap in the implementation of the curriculum and further improve student achievement.
“‘KPM is confident that this effort can ensure that every student receives the best and quality education,” she said.
She informed that the MoE always strives to ensure that students’ education is given priority by implementing a curriculum that is relevant to the learning needs of students according to their age.
“The aim of the primary school curriculum, especially at Level 1 (Year 1, 2 and 3) is to foster physical, cognitive, mental, emotional, social, spiritual, attitude and value development.”
According to her, the implementation of subjects at grade one allows each child to build a foundation of good values, form self-confidence and a positive attitude as well as the acquisition of basic knowledge and skills in preparation for following the next learning.
