Recently, it was announced that Rohingya refugees in Malaysia have been given the opportunity to enroll at the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) thanks to a contribution by Qatar.
The State Legislative Assembly Member (ADUN) for Duyong, Mohd. Noor Helmy Abdul Halem has since questioned the government’s decision to allow Rohingya refugees to study at IIUM.
According to a report by Kosmo, he, who was previously unhappy and harsh towards the ethnic group, was apparently disappointed with the decision.
“This is me from yesterday, answering about the Rohingya, which you want them to study at IIUM, right?”
“One, how do you want to verify their early education? Even the Rohingya people who are here go to school at their own buildings, how do you verify that they are eligible to enter IIUM?” he said in a recent clip.
He further questioned Qatar’s efforts in giving as much as US$50 (RM232 million) for the development of the Rohingya in Malaysia.
“This Qatar, why don’t you want to do it yourself, what do you push it to Malaysians? You take all of these Rohingyas la,”
“It is tired of managing the Rohingya people. And then you can give other people’s country money to manage them. It’s better if you take them, they’re all smashed here in Malaysia and the people here are also just nodding along,” he added.
Apparently, many are in agreement with the assemblyman’s view on this matter and believe that Qatar has provided money for the welfare of the Rohingya people in order to look good but will refuse to accept them as refugees.
