Visiting different countries can often be a great way for one to expand their understanding of different cultures. But then again, it also depends on the purpose of one’s trip to said nation.
Dutch exchange student Sietze Huysinga recently shared a TikTok clip to his account @sietzehuysinga, describing what the surroundings of his university’s library looked like during exam season. New to experiencing what Malaysian academic culture is like, he was quite surprised to find out that local students actually sleep in the library.
Walking around the premises of his campus library, Huysinga came across multiple people sleeping in a variety of places. From an ottoman chair to a sofa, a single-seat table, a group study desk, and even the floor amongst the bookshelves, it seemed as though students found any suitable place where they could rest their eyes for a moment.
Receiving a wave of hilarious responses, many Malaysians shared how they were part of similar experiences during their university days. From falling asleep for just 15 minutes before getting up to study again to choosing the library to doze off at due to it having air conditioning, every person had various reasons as to why they slept in the library.
“The library is one of the best sleeping places okay,” joked one Malaysian user, while another said, “I was 100% dreaming about the lecture I was studying, then I would wake up to not remember my dream, just to resume studying once again.”
And while the majority of commenters took the video in stride, multiple others also remarked about the fact that this practice may be unhealthy to some extent.

Nevertheless, it’s always a priority to find a fair balance between rest and studying – and if it isn’t bothering anyone, no harm to it!
