3-year-old Nur Asyura Medina, affectionately known as ‘Little Medina,’ has successfully undergone liver transplant surgery in China.
She is expected to return to Malaysia this Thursday (8 January), but Little Medina and her family received a pleasant surprise before their homecoming.

Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh, who donated his RM120,000 savings to the family for the surgery, personally flew to Shanghai to visit Little Medina and her family.

At the time of writing, Little Medina is showing positive progress and is doing “really well,” a fact confirmed by the UMNO Youth Chief himself in a video on his Facebook page.
Dr Akmal added that Little Medina will be allowed to return home tomorrow (8 January), approximately 21 days after she was admitted for the procedure. She had been battling biliary atresia, a rare liver disease in infants that prevents bile from leaving the liver.

Dr Yong, the China-based doctor who performed the surgery, is also a Malaysian
After greeting her family, Dr Akmal immediately looked for Little Medina and spent around one hour with her while mingling with her family. He later introduced his followers to Dr Yong, a China-based surgeon and a fellow Malaysian from Johor.
In his video, the UMNO Youth Chief thanked Dr Yong for his efforts in saving Little Medina’s life.
“These are the hands that performed the surgery on Little Medina. We’re negotiating with him to see if we could bring him back to Malaysia,” Dr Akmal joked.

According to Little Medina’s family, they were moved by Dr Akmal’s visit, as he flew from Malaysia to China just to personally witness her recovery.
Little Medina’s predicament had previously caught the attention of the UMNO Youth Chief. He then donated his savings of RM120,000, originally intended for performing the Hajj in Mecca with his wife, to help cover the cost of the surgery.
