In an effort to champion the welfare of stray animals in the state, the local authorities are planning to ban the sales of dogs and cats at pet stores to push community members to adopt, not shop.
Selangor local government, public transportation and new village development committee chairman Ng Sze Han shared this progressive news during the Forum Pengurusan Anjing Terbiar Selangor 2023.
Majlis Bandaraya Subang Jaya took to their Facebook page to showcase a live stream to the Forum Pengurusan Anjing Terbiar Selangor 2023.
Speaking in regards to making changes in bylaws as he has suggested to the State Economic Planning Unit (UPEN), Ng touched on disallowing pet stores from proceeding with the sales of animals.
“We should stop pet shops from selling pets, from selling dogs and cats.”
“If we want dogs and cats, if we want to rear dogs and cats, we should adopt them. I think we need to promote more adoption programmes rather than promoting buying pets from the pet shop,” he said.
He went on to share how there is now a weekly adoption programme, in collaboration with an NGO, at the IOI Mall in his constituency of Kinrara, which has been receiving great responses from the general public.
It is truly great to see the local authorities taking steps towards championing the welfare of strays. Adopting instead of shopping for pets is an amazing way to give a struggling animal a safe and loving home.
