Most of us are proud parents to our furbabies, but not many of us can be as dedicated and devoted as Aunty Aileen is to the homeless dogs in her pet adoption centre, My Pets Haven.
In a viral TikTok video, the team behind @myforeverdoggo tells the inspirational story of Aunty Aileen and how she is singlehandedly running the pet adoption centre she founded 11 years ago.
According to the 65-year-old, the pet adoption centre aims to rehome dogs, raise awareness about the dogs and help control the population of strays.
Walking the dogs
There are about 35-36 dogs in the centre, and every one of them needs to be walked daily, one by one.
As Aunty Aileen walks all the dogs by herself, this task takes her a whopping 5 hours to complete.
“I wake up at 4.30am because I need to start walking the dogs by 5am sharp. If not, I won’t have time. I need 5 hours if I’m alone,” she said.
She also explained that it is important to walk the dogs daily because they spend the majority of their day in cages.
“They require some stretching because they are in a cage 24 hours a day.”
A day in the life
After walking the dogs, Aunty Aileen would clean the kennels, cook the rice, feed the dogs, sweep the compound and change the waste paper.
She does all of the above herself if there are no volunteers, which is reflected in how little she sleeps.
“I sleep only two to three hours. That’s my routine every day,” said the dog lover.
That sounds even more tiring than raising a baby!
Adopt, not buy
“All our dogs are very healthy. We keep them updated on their vaccinations and neuter the dogs if they are not adopted within six months for the females,” said Aunty Aileen as she urged the public to adopt instead of buying their pets.
This is so that the decrease in demand will discourage dog breeders.
She also emphasized the importance of equally neutering both male and female dogs because it is not fair to just neuter the female dogs (bitches) when male dogs are the culprits when it comes to the overpopulation of strays.
“We have so many stray dogs here. They are beautiful Malaysian dogs. Low maintenance and good guard dogs,” she said proudly.
