We’re pretty sure that everyone has watched at least one YouTube video in their lifetime, some of us may even have a list of our favourite YouTubers! But did you know that many of these YouTubers have made it a full-time career?

Yup, that’s right! YouTube as a career is particularly lucrative. Some of our Malaysian YouTubers can earn up to RM155,000 a month! Back in July, there was even news circulating about 12-year-old Alyssa Dezek, who purchased her own car with the money she made from uploading YouTube videos! Crazy stuff, right?

Are you wondering how you too can be paid for uploading content on YouTube? Here is everything you need to know:

1. YouTubers make most of their income from advertisement revenue

Advertisement revenue is the most common revenue model on YouTube with YouTubers earning 55% of any ad revenue collected on their page. That means all the ads that pop up before or even during the videos we watch, can help the channel earn up to RM1,000 per day!

However, following YouTube’s latest guidelines, you need to have at least 1,000 subscribers in order to monetise your videos. The rates that an advertiser will pay varies from 50 cents to RM3 per view but on average, you can actually earn up to RM70 per 1,000 ad views!

2. YouTubers can also earn through corporate and brand sponsorships or partnerships

Much like all the Instagram influencers we follow, YouTubers can earn from brand sponsorships too! Companies love working with channels to promote a certain product or service of theirs especially if the YouTuber’s content resonates with their values.

However, the catch is that companies usually like to work with YouTubers that have a wide following so you gotta work hard to make your channel grow! Scoring brand deals will be super beneficial to your channel as the payouts range from RM1,000 up to RM10,000 per video (this depends solely on the number of subscribers and viewers on your channel!).

3. To help grow their channel, YouTubers must spend a lot of time interacting with their viewers and supporting other YouTubers too

As easy as it sounds, you won’t be able to make a fortune with your YouTube channel overnight. It requires a lot of hard work to grow your channel and gain loyal subscribers!

By consistently watching other YouTubers’ videos and interacting with your viewers, YouTube’s algorithm will make your videos appear on people’s home page hence giving your channel more coverage!

4. Expand your online presence by being active on other social media platforms such as Instagram, Twitch or Twitter!

With the number of content creators growing each day, the competition is fierce! In order to stand out, you need to consider being active on other social media platforms too.

For example, if your Instagram content stands out to a particular user, they would be more inclined to click on your YouTube channel to watch the content you have there. Be sure you make full use of all your social platforms and link your YouTube channel on them. Instagram even has a ‘Swipe Up’ feature where you can directly link your videos so your followers don’t have to exit the app to watch your YouTube content!

5. Invest in a good video editing software & take up a digital production course to master your skills!

It goes without saying that in order to be a successful YouTuber, you need to be uploading awesome content to attract your viewers! Softwares such as Adobe After Effects and Final CutPro are amongst the popular ones used to edit videos. But in order to be a pro at utilising this software, you need to have video production & editing skills. What’s a better way to do that than by taking up a professional Digital Film Production course, right?
