Despite the announcement of his return as Superman after the post-credits scene of Black Adam, Henry Cavill’s return was quickly reversed weeks later, much to the dismay of the fans who have been longing to see him again on the big screen.
A new Superman film, Superman: Legacy was announced earlier this year, with the head of DC Studios, James Gunn writing the script and directing the movie. A hunt for the new Man of Steel had since begun and after a series of auditions, DC Studios has finally found their new Superman.
No, it’s really not Henry Cavill and we’re saddened by that too but it’s time we welcome our new Superman – David Corenswet!
Standing at 193 cm tall, the 30-year-old actor was chosen to lead the new DC Universe (DCU) which will officially begin when his movie comes up in July 2025. If you’re not familiar with David, you might have seen him on Netflix’s Hollywood where he played Jack Castello in 2020, and as The Projectionist in the 2022 horror film, Pearl.
In the meantime, Rachel Brosnahan has also been cast as Lois Lane, Superman / Clark Kent’s love interest, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
James Gunn has yet to reveal more about the casting or the characters that will appear in Legacy. As the film is 2 years away and filming will only begin in January 2024, it might take a while before we hear anything more about it.
Earlier this year, James Gunn announced the 1st chapter of DCU, titled Gods and Monsters which comprises 5 movies and 5 TV series, which you can refer to below.
- Superman: Legacy (July 2025)
- The Authority
- Batman: The Brave and The Bold
- Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
- Swamp Thing
The TV series will begin an animation, which is expected to be released somewhere in 2024. Despite the animation coming first before Legacy, Gunn confirmed that the movie will mark the true beginning of the DCU.
- Creature Commandos (2024)
- Waller
- Lanterns (Green Lantern series)
- Paradise Lost (taking place in a time before Wonder Woman was born)
- Booster Gold
You can watch the announcement of the 1st chapter of the DCU here.
The recent DC movie is The Flash, which is still playing in theatres. Blue Beetle will follow in August, before Aquaman 2 hits theatres this Christmas.
With the casting announcement and the parts of the DCU’s direction revealed, we certainly can’t wait to see what Gunn has in store for us. DC fans, what else do you hope to see in the DCU?
