A tofu processing factory in Cheras was found to be dirty, stinky and infested with cockroaches when officers from the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) conducted a sanitary inspection on the premises yesterday (15 June).

According to Berita Harian, the mayor of Kuala Lumpur, Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan said that five members of the Health & Environment Department (DBKL) conducted the inspection which took place at about 10am.

He said the floor and ceiling of the room where the tofu was processed and prepared were black, dirty and infested with cockroaches while the toilet was extremely smelly and had growths all over.

“The operators did not wear shoes or head coverings when processing food and the factory was found to have never hired a pest control company regularly,” he said.

Nor Hisham then said that the premises were ordered to be closed for 14 days according to Section 11 of the Food Act 1983 starting 16 June.

“If found to be still dirty, a new closing notice will be issued and there’s a possibility the factory’s license will be cancelled,” he said.

“I urge all parties involved in food production to maintain extreme hygiene and product quality.”

“DBKL will fight against all dirty manufacturers like this.”
