Seafood is considered luxury to some, so many of us double-check on pricing prior to ordering to avoid spending over the budget. But what happens when the total bill turns out to be way over your wildest imagination?
On the Facebook page of a seafood restaurant in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, the management shared the story of a family who was unable to pay their bill of RM1,102.20. They could only fork out RM400.
“They refused to pay the full amount because it was too expensive. We urge this family to settle the outstanding amount of RM702.2 immediately.”
The FB post was shared on 2nd September and the family visited the restaurant on the night of August 27.
“You know what you ordered, so there is no reason to skip the payment,” the management said.
“The cashier suggested to pay 50-50!”
In a surprising turn of event, the alleged customer who went viral for not paying the full amount came forward to share his side of the story. According to the family, it was their 1st visit and they didn’t know what to expect, so they asked for suggestions from the waiter.
“The menu stated RM48 for every 100 gram of lobster, which was still within our budget, so we ordered small-sized lobsters and the waiter convinced us that she would not bring us big ones.”
The customer said the waiter brought them a 1 kg lobster without informing them. So when it was time to pay the bill, the family was shocked. The steamed bamboo lobster alone was RM480. The family also ordered other dishes and drinks, which you can see in the receipt below.
“The cashier suggested us to pay half of the bill, and even said that this always happens when the customers were not informed of the prices. So, we paid RM500 but the cashier herself took only RM400.”
It’s rare for a customer to successfully bargain with the cashier, so if you find it skeptical, you can watch and listen to the video below where the cashier is heard saying,
“Just pay half of it. Settle.”
PDRM is now in the picture
In another FB post by the seafood restaurant, it was revealed that officers from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living paid the restaurant a visit following the circulation of the viral incident.
“Nothing suspicious going on here. The matter has been settled, and we have since lodged a police report.”
The management also said the video was taken BEFORE both parties agreed to split the bill, and the family is, once again, urged to come forward to resolve the matter.
What do you think of the matter? Should the waiter inform the customers about the exact price prior to serving them?
