A tech company in Shenzhen has captured public attention by offering bonuses of up to 1 million yuan (RM613,000) to employees who successfully lose weight.

Following the announcement, one staff member received 20,000 yuan (RM12,200) after shedding 18 kilograms in just 90 days.

Insta360, also known as Arashi Vision Inc, launched its annual “Million Yuan Weight Loss Challenge” on August 12, aiming to promote a healthy lifestyle through exercise and balanced nutrition.

Employees can register for the challenge, and for every 0.5 kilogram lost, they earn a cash reward of 500 yuan (RM300).

This year’s challenge crowned employee Xie Yaqi as the “Weight Loss Champion” after she lost 18 kilograms in three months by exercising 1.5 hours daily and following a strict diet.

Xie also shared the “Qin Hao” method, once used by a famous Chinese actor to lose 10 kilograms in 15 days, as inspiration for colleagues facing weight loss plateaus.

Since 2022, the company has held seven rounds of the challenge, distributing nearly 2 million yuan (RM1.22 million) in cash prizes. Last year alone, 99 employees collectively lost 950 kilograms and shared a total reward of 1 million yuan.

Interestingly, the challenge includes a “penalty clause” where employees who regain weight must pay a fine of 800 yuan (RM480) for every 0.5 kilogram gained. So far, no one has been penalised.
