Just yesterday, our national Paralympic shuttler, Cheah Liek Hou, clinched Malaysia’s first gold medal by winning the men’s SU5 singles final at the 2024 Paris Paralympics on September 2.
After his win, the 36-year-old was so overwhelmed with pride and excitement that he celebrated in a way that left many netizens amused.
He celebrated his win with pride
In a 15-second clip shared by @ms.kimcherry, she captures a moment where a men’s singles match featuring Muhammad Fareez Anuar was in progress.
Cheah was enthusiastically celebrating right behind the badminton court, completely oblivious to the game in progress, which added a touch of humour to the situation.
In the background, he can be seen hilariously running from one end to another while proudly waving the Malaysian flag and jumping for joy in celebration.
Luckily for the excited shuttler, during those few seconds when he was running through the frame with excitement, Fareez and his opponent were still preparing for the match, so no shuttle was in play at that moment.
A little recap of his recent gold medal win!
Cheah took down Indonesia’s Suryo Nugroho in straight sets, scoring 21-13 and 21-15, at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena. This is Cheah’s second gold medal, having also won one at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.
After his impressive win, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh announced that he’ll be receiving a RM1,000,000 cash reward from the Government.
Yeoh also revealed that the national hero will receive a monthly allowance of RM5,000 for life through the Olympic Sports Incentive Scheme (SITO).
“So incredibly proud of Cheah Liek Hou for bringing home Malaysia’s first gold medal at the Paralympics Paris 2024. It’s amazing to hear our national anthem, Negaraku, being played at the Games,” she added.
Netizens were just as amused by Cheah’s celebratory antics, prompting them to flood the comment section with their thoughts and reactions!
“Maybe he was trying to give Fareez some sort of encouragement.”
“His behaviour is so adorable.”
“This is quite funny to witness. He looks adorable, like a kid running around.”
“Fareez must’ve thought, ‘Look at my senior being a menace, running around the stadium.'”
