A video recently circulated online, showing guests in a hotel room indulging in a hotpot meal by cooking the meat, including pork, in kettles provided by the hotel room.
The location of the hotel was not disclosed, and many believed that it possibly took place outside of Malaysia. Local content creator and influencer, Mekyun, reacted to the viral clip and shared her disgust about the behaviour, calling it “unhygienic and irresponsible.”

“If you can’t be hygienic, at least be respectful.”
Despite not knowing if the incident took place in the country or abroad, Mekyun took the opportunity to remind fellow Malaysians about being considerate to others, especially to the Muslim friends who are sharing the room and facilities.
In her Instagram post, Mekyun reminded others that kettles in hotel rooms are strictly used for boiling water only. She also said that Muslim guests will not be able to use the kettles anymore if the equipment was used to cook pork.
“The grease will leave a stain, and the bacteria will remain in the kettles. What about other guests who are using the kettles to make beverages, especially our Muslim friends?”
“This is an insult that makes others feel unsafe.”

Mekyun also reminded everyone to be respectful of others, especially to Muslims, who will not be able to use any equipment that was exposed to pork.
“Pork is Haram (forbidden) to Muslims. As a Chinese, I am embarassed to see this. Please don’t ever do this, it’s disgusting and rude.”
She added that it is a must to have awareness, and it is merely basic to be hygienic and respectful.
To those in the hospitality industry, what tips do you have to share about kettles in hotel rooms?
