A majority of the time, we see Westerners living lavish lifestyles in Malaysia either because they’re earning an expat salary or because of their money they saved up while living in their home countries.
This has caused the notion that Malaysia is a haven for white immigrants with ‘western money’.
A British immigrant living in Langkawi, Greg Larcombe, took to his TikTok account to defend Malaysia after someone had said that our country is only great when you have ‘western money’.
He wrote, “That’s a pretty poor thing to say.”
His video is a response to someone who said,
“Another entitled ‘expat’, yet 95% of Malaysians would move to any western country, like the UK, if they had an opportunity. Malaysia is great when you have western money, otherwise no.”
Here is his response
He started of by clarifying that he isn’t an expat.
“Well, first and foremost, I must say, I am NOT an expat. I am an immigrant.”
He then went on to defend Malaysia from the notion that Malaysians would leave our home country as only western money is good here.

“Secondly, if you think that 95% of Malaysians would leave this beautiful country, where they are making good money, where they have good jobs, where they have a family, culture, traditions, to go to the west simply to make a bit of coin, then you have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Are there people in Malaysia that would like to go and live in the UK? Yes. Are there people in Malaysia that would like to go and live anywhere that they can make more money? Yes. Because, some people in Malaysia are struggling. Some people in Malaysia, though, are in the middle classes, where they own houses, they own cars, they have good jobs. Some people in Malaysia are ‘stonkingly‘ rich,” he explained.
“Why would these people want to leave this country to just go and live in the west?”
He added that the mindset of western countries being better than Malaysia is ridiculous to him.
“This idea that the west is somehow better is outdated and when you’re making comments like that, pointing a finger, you’re trying to sound like you’ve got something to say to attack me. All that comment does is attack Malaysia. The idea that to live in this country, to enjoy life in this country, you need western money is absurd,” he said.
