Recently, a group of hecklers once again interrupted a Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) dinner event in Muar, Johor when they showed up unannounced outside the event’s premises and made a fuss.

The group, consisting of 30 individuals threw water bottles and firecrackers towards the crowd enjoying their dinner at the ‘Malam Mesra Muo’ fundraiser in the Yong Sheng Banquet Hall.

This was the second time an interruption like this has happened after something similar took place during Syed Saddiq’s speech in Muar on October 16, 2022.

No place for violence and hooliganism

Consequently, the Coalition for Clean and Fair Election (Bersih) has since condemned the acts of violence and unruly behaviour displayed by the group, stating that violence and hooliganism in election culture will not be tolerated.

“Bersih stresses that violent and hooligan culture cannot be part of clean and free election values.”

“These acts are a form of negative campaigning and extreme provocation which must be rejected by all Malaysians,” they wrote.

“Bersih calls on all peace-loving Malaysians who want a more positive and healthy campaign to strongly condemn and reject these forms of negative acts, regardless of which party they are from,” it said in a statement.

“Elections are for parties to contest based on ideas, policies, manifestos and actions to help the people.”

An election offence

They also warned that the parties involved with violence and hooliganism could be convicted of an election offence.

“This is under Section 4A of the Election Offences Act 1954 as promoting feelings of ill-will or hostility, aside from being an offence under the Penal Code.”

“If convicted, the person can be imprisoned for up to five years or fined up to RM10,000 or both,” it said.

Hopefully there will not be anymore violence being brought into politics.
