A very alarming video uploaded by Al-Jazeera has exposed the appalling crime of baby-selling in Malaysia which involves pregnant mothers, doctors, police, National Registry Department officers and sex workers.

What’s most shocking is the fact that these babies are advertised openly on Malaysian social media.

According to the video, buyers can choose the baby online and there is even a catalog for them to choose from. Chinese and Chindian babies are the most popular and most expensive because they are considered more beautiful.

The footage also revealed that there are many Facebook groups set up for “baby-adoption”. The post typically includes baby’s due date, expected medical cost and “consolidation fee”. A baby’s price is determined by the gender, skin colour and race.

The reporters who posed as a potential buyer managed to meet up with a baby seller in Malaysia. The baby seller who calls herself ‘bonda’ admitted that she had handled over 100 Indonesians pregnant mothers selling off their babies. She preferred to handle Indonesians because Malaysian pregnant mothers sometimes change their mind. It costs USD 2500 (RM11,100) to buy a baby complete with falsified documents.

To ensure the deal goes smoothly, the buyer and seller each must prepare an agreement which will be signed by a paid-up police officer acting as witness. Yes, corrupted Malaysian police are involved in this illegal trade.

“You need an insider in the police to make it easy.”

There must be a police, just sign and we’re done. Simple,” said the baby seller.

When the reporter dug deeper, they discovered doctor Paneer whom can connect them to pregnant Malaysians and foreigners who want to sell their babies.

“Chinese people expensive la boss. They charged for about RM30,000 for the baby alone,” said doctor Panier.

The RM30,000 excludes his service fee of RM20,000 which include falsifying birth certificate and delivery of the baby.

“Vietnamese baby also can, isn’t it? They look like Chinese,” said doctor Paneer.

He revealed that the money trail reaches to people holding high posts in National Registry Department which issues birth certificate. People who work there keep their mouth sealed.

Already done so many, nothing to worry about.” said doctor Paneer.

The reporters then went on to investigate Gamma Medic group which run over 5 medical clinics. The group chairman is an individual with the title of “Dato Seri”. His son has the same title as well.

In the clinic which run by the chairman’s daughter in-law, she told the reporters that the delivery charge is RM2500 and falsifying birth certificate is RM7000.

You don’t have to be nervous because we do this on a very regular basis” said the female doctor.

They have 8 officers paid up over at National Registry Department to handle the falsification of birth certificates.

We’ve done this for more than 30 years already. Since my dad’s time you know, so there’s no problem actually,” said the husband of the doctor who was also in the room.

The video highlighted how easy it was to adopt babies in Malaysia – as easy as scrolling through a few ‘baby adoption’ websites. It is seriously shocking how these things are happening under our noses and the people involved in this illegal business (from police officers to Dato Seri’s).

With this illegal activity already running for decades, the future of it changing is bleak.
