When we ask for help, we are choosing to believe the best in other people because why else would somebody spend time and effort in helping us? Therefore, it can be hurtful when someone we trust betrays us.
Yesterday (22 Feb), a man in Sibu lost RM1,000 from his bank account after trusting an auxiliary police officer to help him with money withdrawal from an ATM machine. The police officer had withdrawn money from the man’s bank account after helping him.
Running an errand
It all started when the man’s wife asked him to go to the bank to withdraw RM200 in cash at about 9am yesterday.
However, as the man was unsure of how to operate the ATM, he asked for the help of a nearby auxiliary police officer.
Something wrong
According to Oriental Daily, everything was as usual until the man’s son checked his parents’ bank account at 10am. They noticed that apart from the RM200 withdrawn earlier, another RM1,000 is also missing from the bank account.
The man’s wife was shocked and immediately went to the bank to check their bank account records. She confirmed that RM1,000 is in fact missing from their bank account and the money had been withdrawn without her and her husband knowing.
Discovering the culprit
The man’s wife then proceeded to lodge a police report on the incident. After reviewing the CCTV footage near the bank, the police found that the suspect who stole the money was the auxiliary police officer who helped the man with his money withdrawal earlier.
The suspect was detained by the police in the afternoon and later brought to court. He has been remanded for three days starting today.
