On 1st August, it was officially made mandatory for citizens to wear face masks in certain public places such as in public transportation and areas where physical distancing could not be monitored. However, there was much confusion and speculation that followed this announcement as citizens were unclear of what other circumstances would require them to wear face masks. Many were even fined for not wearing face masks while driving in their private vehicles.

Fortunately according to Defence Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, those who were fined for not wearing face masks in their own cars will be refunded. In a live press conference held yesterday, Ismail Sabri said that he discussed the matter with PDRM authorities and those who paid fines for not wearing masks in their private vehicles are allowed to claim a refund.

The minister then went on to specify situations in which the public are expected to wear face masks:

Face masks are mandatory when you’re in a crowded area like buses, taxis, LRT, MRT, KTM, e-hailing rides and even crowded public places.

The crowded public places include:

  • Public markets
  • Pasar Tani
  • Night markets (pasar malam)
  • Supermarkets
  • Tourist spots
  • Cinemas

Here’s where  you don’t need to be wearing a mask at all:

  • Inside your own houses
  • Inside your own cars

However, there still remains a lack of clarity on whether face masks are required in specific occasions that have yet to be clarified. Recently, a widely circulated message on Whatsapp revealed pictures of a man who was allegedly fined for pumping petrol without a mask.
