Recent reports revealed that the government is upgrading 26 sets of toilets at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) in stages, at a total cost of RM11.8 million.
According to a report by Sabah News, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister and Minister responsible for the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK), Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, shared that he had visited the toilets at the airport after complaints had been made by the public regarding their condition and cleanliness.

KKIA Senior Manager Jefry Ramli explained that out of the 26 sets of toilets for men, women, and persons with disabilities (OKU), 20 sets have been completed, while the other 6 are expected to be fully completed by April or May 2026.
“Are the toilets made of gold?”
The cost of the upgrades has caught Malaysians off guard as they question why the project required an allocation of RM11.8 million.

“RM450,000 for a toilet set? Can someone enlighten me on what the real calculation (for the cost) is? Isn’t the price crazy?”

“RM11.8 million toilets. What kind of toilets are these? Is this an attraction for tourists entering Sabah? After this, Visit Toilet Year can be organised.”

“Are the toilet bowls made of gold for them to cost RM11.8 million?”
