To the rest of the world, Malaysia appears to be a thriving 21st-century nation. However, many people still believe that Malaysia is a ‘third-world country’ that is agricultural, tribal, and primitive.
When an American visitor @tiffanywernertraveling in Malaysia posted a TikTok video praising Malaysia for being nothing like most Americans might think, it received 204,000 views and counting!
Tiffany (@tiffanywernertraveling), who defines herself as a ‘travelling mama,’ questioned her fans in a video posted three days ago:
“For all of our people in America who think I am in a third world country….does this look third world to you?” to which she flipped her camera and shared a look at the decorations of Pavilion KL, a shopping mall located at the center of Kuala Lumpur.
“We have nothing like this where we’re from!” – she declared to her US audience!
The comments section was flooded with words of support and agreement. Many indicated that Americans indeed knew little about the other countries besides their own.
One of the most stereotyped view of Malaysians is of the people living in trees, to which TikTok user Ling highlights.
Although TikTok user Joel C. would agree otherwise about Malaysia’s status as a first-world country!
We can only hope that Tiffany, who appears to be touring Malaysia’s tourist attractions based on her TikTok videos, will recognise our fondness for grandiose displays of decorations commemorating Malaysia’s major holidays, such as Suria KLCC’s magnificent set up of a ‘Qing Ming’ temple or Avenue K’s fantastic build of the Taj Mahal within their premises.

We are glad for netizens such as Tiffany to showcase the real Malaysia and clear up any prejudices the world might have.
