Malaysia will be hosting the SEA games in 2027, and according to the Youth and Sports Minister, this will cost more than RM 700 million.

Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, has said that the Sarawakian government will split the cost with the federal government if certain conditions are met.

According to The Borneo Post, the conditions are that some of the sporting events and the opening ceremony will need to be hosted in Sarawak.

“We also suggested for the opening ceremony of the SEA Games to be held in Sarawak while the closing ceremony can be in Putrajaya.”

“If they can agree to this, Sarawak has no problems stepping up and serving as co-host of the SEA Games in 2027,” he continued.

It is said that Putrajaya approached Sarawak to co-host this biennial sporting event.

“Hosting the SEA Games is expected to cost the federal government an estimated RM750 million so meaning we will share half of the cost in 2027 based on our ability.”

The Premier added that Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has already spoken with her counterpart in the Sarawakian government, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, and there was already an unofficial discussion between him and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Lastly, he mentioned that Sarawak would need to start saving up their money to prepare for the Games in three years’ time.

This certainly sounds interesting. Stay tuned for more updates!
