The Economy Ministry recently took to its official social media channels to provide an update regarding 1 of its initiatives to increase the income of poor and B40 Malaysians through agriculture, the People’s Income Initiative Project – Agricultural Entrepreneur Initiative (IPR-Intan).
The post detailed the success story of the IPR-Intan initiative in Putrajaya, whereby an abandoned land in the Federal Territory was turned into a 20-acre chilli farm which allowed B40 Malaysians to earn up to RM5,000/month!
From abandoned land to the biggest chilli farm in Putrajaya
At the start of the video, aerial footage of the farm was shown, with the host asserting that the chilli farm is the largest in Putrajaya.
He then elaborated that the 20-acre chilli farm was developed by the Economy Ministry through the IPR-Intan initiative.
1 of the hallmarks of the initiative is that unused Government land will be turned into modern agricultural farms for Malaysians to generate income.
This particular land in Putrajaya was supposed to be the Putrajaya Monorail Depot but has been abandoned for a whopping 15 years, with the chilli farm now notably being right beside the ERL track.
The farm produced 40 tonnes of chilli worth RM480,000 last season
The Economy Ministry further elaborated that the chilli farm has been operational since August last year and during the 1st season, it managed to produce a staggering 40 tonnes of chilli, which is worth RM480,000.
Bear in mind that the 40-tonne produce was only from 10 acres of land. The Government only recently doubled the farm’s area to 20 acres.
It is estimated that the farm can now produce an astounding 100 tonnes of chilli next season, which will be worth RM1.2 million.
Everything is provided by the Economy Ministry, Malaysians only need to develop the chilli farm to earn up to RM5,000 a month
Through IPR-Intan, the farm is run by B40 and underprivileged Malaysians who signed up for the programme with zero experience in farming.
Furthermore, the Economy Ministry provided everything required for them to develop the farm, from polybags, seeds and the land; hence they don’t need to use their capital to start farming.
The Economy Ministry also revealed that they don’t have to worry about finding buyers for the chillies as big companies are already in line to purchase them, including Nestle and Giant.
All in all, the IPR-Intan participants are now earning up to RM5,000/month thanks to this initiative.
