Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has revealed that a record number of people crossed the Singapore-Malaysia land border checkpoints on 13 December, with over 553,000 crossings recorded within 24 hours.
Accordingly, ICA revealed that it expects continuous heavy traffic at both Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints for the upcoming festive holidays and advised travellers to factor in additional waiting time.
Over 553,000 people crossed the Singapore-Malaysia border in just one day
In a press release, ICA said that the over 553,000 crossings on 13 December surpassed the previous peak recorded in September 2024, when 543,000 crossings were recorded.
Moreover, the figure recorded on 13 December 2024 was a 15% increase compared to the same period last year.
Due to the high volume of travellers, car travellers departing during peak periods had to wait up to 3 hours for immigration clearance due to traffic tailback from Malaysia.
ICA advised travellers to cooperate with its officers
Hence, ICA advised travellers to factor in additional waiting time, especially over the weekends, and alternatively, ICA told travellers to consider taking the cross-border bus services.
The Singaporean authority also sought travellers’ understanding to cooperate with its officers, observe traffic rules and maintain lane discipline.
Furthermore, ICA warned that it would not hesitate to take stern action against travellers who do not comply with instructions and commit offences at the checkpoints.
