2 Malaysian police officers were arrested for allegedly trying to extort money from a man at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex (CIQ) at Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) and have been remanded for 3 days.

According to a report by Berita Harian, the 2 suspects, aged 32 and 33, were arrested around 1:50pm on April 5 (Friday).

This comes after the victim, who only wants to be known as Lim, shared that the 2 policemen tried to extort money from him on April 2 (Tuesday), during a press conference organised by the Head of the Youth Wing of the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) of Johor, Heng Zhi Li.

He also claimed that he was accompanied by 1 of the suspects to several ATM machines to withdraw money, despite informing that there was no money in his 2 bank accounts.

The victim then pretended to have an asthma attack after withdrawing RM1,000 at a bank in Taman Pelangi and managed to escape with the help of a local couple passing through the area.

Johor Police Chief, Commissioner M. Kumar has since confirmed that a police report was submitted by the victim on April 5 (Friday).

“Preliminary investigations found that the victim was going through an immigration check at BSI when the 2 suspects arrested him and claimed he had a criminal record,”

The suspects then extorted RM2,000 from the victim so that he would not be arrested and detained in police lockup,” he explained, adding that the Johor police is committed to combating integrity issues and criminal misconduct among police officers.

“Strict action without compromise will be taken against any officer and police force member who commits a crime based on the principle of equality under the law in accordance with Article 8 of the Federal Constitution,” he said.
